A group of fourth-graders from a school in Durham, North Carolina, who launched on Kickstarter to take their classroom off-grid, have now flipped the switch and are operating on renewables only.

The project culminated with a “flip the switch” celebration that officially took the fourth grade classroom off the grid. “There is a magic to solar power,” Sebens said in the video.

Siemens has invested $750,000 to open a small but highly wired classroom at the University of Central Florida for teaching students how to run a digital or smart electric grid.

A group of 4th graders from Central Park School for Children in Durham, North Carolina has raised enough funds on Kickstarter to allow the classroom to go off-grid.

The Connected Grid portfolio builds on Cisco's current lineup for the smart grid. In a statement, Cisco detailed the 2010 Connected Grid Router (CGR 2010) and 2520 Connected Grid Switch (CGS 2520).
