Just swipe from the right side of the sensor notch. The right “horn,” if you will. Most of the icons in the Control Panel can be long-pressed to open settings or expanded functions.

I’ve reviewed a number of Huawei and Honor’s recent phones, with both brands running EMUI atop Android 9, and I find the side swipe for back to be a really good solution.
