A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake hit central Myanmar (formerly Burma) Friday (March 28), shaking Mandalay, the country's second-largest city, as well as nearby countries, including China and Thailand, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

A 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit the heart of war-ravaged Myanmar of Friday, killing scores of people and prompting the country’s military junta to make a rare plea for international assistance.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the magnitude 2.1 earthquake had an epicenter near the town of Trion, Georgia, near Alabama's eastern state line. That's about 25 miles from Mentone in northwest Alabama, and about 60 miles from Gadsden. The quake was registered about 7 a.m. Central time March 29.

The Nacogdoches Consolidated Communications Center said the US Geological Service reported a 3.5 magnitude earthquake just southwest of Lake Nacogdoches.
