Smoke has already been detected drifting in through Montana, North Dakota and northern Minnesota, where air quality alerts have been issued.

More than 166 fires are actively burning across Canada, according to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre.

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew said the fires have forced 17,000 people across several communities to flee.
