A former senior minister in Singapore's government, who was jailed following a high-profile trial last year, has been allowed to serve the remainder of his 12-month sentence from home. Subramaniam Iswaran was imprisoned on 7 October after he pleaded guilty to accepting gifts worth more than S$403,

Iswaran began his 12-month jail term in October after pleading guilty to obtaining valuable items from tycoon Ong Beng Seng.

Under the home detention scheme, inmates are allowed to leave their homes for approved employment during working hours, while those without employment are generally allowed out for a few hours in the afternoon. Iswaran’s lawyers confirmed that offenders typically become eligible for home detention after serving about one-third of their sentence.
