Joseph A. Sterner III died three times. During World War II, he was captured by the Japanese in the Philippines and survived the Bataan Death March, a 60-mile trek of misery to a prisoner-of-war camp.

It was that camp were many of the survivors of the Bataan Death March ended up to endure three years of punishment, starvation, illness and death at the hands of their Japanese captors.
