Jul 22, 2014 · Colt apparently only made about 506 1st generation SAA revolvers chambered in .44 Special. In 1929 or 1931 (sources disagree) Colt changed the barrel caliber stamp to "Colt Single Action Army .44 Special".

The Colt SAA, originally designed for the 1872 government service trials, is one of the most well known single action revolvers ever made, with a multitude of replicas still in production. This example is a first gen pistol, made in 1898, however very few of the original parts still remain.

The .44 Special is a great cartridge in the Colt SAA, but I prefer to handload to enhance its power and performance. The problem is that in the pre-World War II era, there were only 507 Colt SAAs produced in .44 S&W Special, which usually command a premium from collectors – and do not belong in my hands that would put them to work.
