Jul 1, 2007 · If strings measure the same, the gauge is the same. AFAIK Rotosound Swingbass (those with exposed cores) are thin but very tight. Tightness isn't a going measure for gauge (but does gauge really matter as far as strings fit the bass?)..105 wouldn't be floppy until you downtune or have a short scale.

Jul 3, 2008 · By the way, I think you don't mean "neck". You mean "fingerboard". And ALL strings are capable of causing wear of the fingerboard to some extent or another. It's just a matter of how much, i.e. a great deal to not even noticeable. Compression-wound strings are typically easier on the fingerboard than are roundwounds, i.e. they cause less wear. MM

You can always get really thin yarn from a craft store and attempt your own wrapping, but it will never look as slick as a fresh factory set of silk wrapped strings.

I use DR roundwound strings myself for bass guitar, and their life in the "sweet zone" is measured in months, not weeks for my application. If I am desiring a lasting bright tone, I try to be diligent about cleaning the strings with 91% alcohol.

I am interested to try a pressure wound or half round string as a half way between rounds and flats.
