The 6 chime whistle is a melodious sound that was typical of major railroads that wanted a signature sound. The SP, B&M, C&O, NYC, and Reading all had unique 6 chimes used as system whistles.

Reading 6-chime, because it's such an imperious commanding sound, it screams "get the hell out of the way" without being discordant. Or B&O "tumor-top" 3-chime, a very gentle, melodious-sounding whistle, practically lulls you to sleep.

Here's my old Santa Fe whistle. It's not stamped or numbered, so no way to tell what it was used on. It's 6" in diameter, with 6 chambers. It's cast iron, made by LFM (Locomotive Finished Materials, Atchison, KS. The LFM plant is now Rockwell, and they still make railroad castings).
