Dec 24, 2024 · Marco Polo was born around 1254 in Venice, capital of the Venetian Republic. His father, merchant Niccolò Polo, had his household in Venice and left Marco's pregnant mother to travel to Asia with his brother Maffeo Polo.

For about 17 years Marco Polo worked for the emperor. His errands took him all the way to southwestern China and probably Burma (now Myanmar). For their return trip to Venice, the Polos took 14 of Kublai Khan’s ships.

Marco Polo married Donata Badoer in 1300 and they had three daughters. He became ill when he was 69. Many doctors tried to heal him, but he died on 8 January 1324 in Venice.

Marco was left behind with family as his father and uncle traveled through Asia, including to Mongolia. Marco’s mother had died when he was young, so was moved to live with his aunt and a different uncle. They raised him and taught him about the family business and about money.
