Mario RPG was so different from the Mario games that followed because Squaresoft (now Square Enix) made it, and there was no set expectations for the Mario RPGs yet. So if they'd actually made a proper sequel (not Paper Mario; I'm well aware that started as a SMRPG sequel), what would you have expected?
