Dec 4, 2001 · here's my quench tank, a little over 2.5" deep. If I was quenching more than 3 or 4 knives at a time I might have issues with the oil getting too hot. I've thought of mounting a burner under it, but if I have to do that I'll just stick with heating scrap in the forge.

No need for a longer tank, all that matters is the first one second. I just remembered another really simple quench tank agitator/circulator. The tank was about 24" high and 4-5" wide.

Aug 12, 2005 · Set up a long enough or deep enough quench tank with plenty of oil volume. Three to five gallons ( or more) is needed for a sword. The tank should be sturdily mounted or braced. A large oxygen/helium/nitrogen tank with the top cut off makes a great sword quench tank. Get the forge running at low heat so you can try and maintain the blade at 1500F.

Nov 13, 2008 · I quench knives and swords in it. One easy source for a large vertical, quench tank is cutting the top off an old 240CF oxygen/co2/helium/etc tank. The scrap yards are full of them for around $0.30 a pound. Smaller size tanks work well for regular knife quenching. As with all quench tanks, make a top that fits closely.

Apr 17, 2017 · Your example is different than a quench tank and sword. A hot blade will go right through a PVC pipe filled with oil. Then you have a burning tank with a spout of oil coming out. It happens all the time with people quenching in the plastic 5 gallon oil bucket. PVC melts between 100 and 200°F/40-100°C.

A section of aluminum gutter ( like you find hanging on your eves) with the ends epoxied on (cut to whatever length you wish) makes a good edge quench tank. I suspend mine in a water bath which reduces the volume of oil needed.
