Feb 7, 2006 · I wonder if anybody has any ideas on this. I’m building a bar out of standard red oak and plan on finishing it with a very dark stain. For the top, I was considering another hardwood with a contrasting color. My hardwood dealer has access to some exotics and all domestic lumber. I’d like to use something that’s not crazy expensive.

Dec 18, 2011 · After bleaching the wood, applying a poly finish over the raw wood, then slowly darkening the stain with repeated (maybe 8) coats of gel stain, the customer has finally approved of the stain and grain pattern. I have applied 3 coats of MinWax antique Oil finish to give a soft luster as requested with a wonderful result.

Jan 11, 2005 · I bought about 100 board feet of red oak mostly in 6/4 for my current project. Out of all that lumber one piece is RED the rest of the lumber is that lighter colour of red oak. I some how missed this piece and now I’ve milled in into one of the most prominent elements of this job. The stain is light and I’m certain that this will show.

May 31, 2004 · I recently picked up a couple hundred board feet of red oak (freshly sawed). I have managed to locate a source to kiln dry the wood, however I am concerned about the process he uses. He has explained that he does not use a conditioning cycle to add moisture at the end of the drying process (because he runs the kiln at a lower temperature).
