Southern Railway 4501 is a preserved Ms class 2-8-2 "Mikado" type steam locomotive. Built in October 1911 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, No. 4501 was the first of its wheel arrangement type for the Southern Railway (SOU).

Unfolding from humble beginnings in October 1911, the Southern Railway 4501 stands as a testament to steam engine resilience. Manufactured by the Baldwin Locomotive Works with builder number 37085, this 2-8-2 Mikado locomotive paved the way for 484 more of its kind, in various designs, across Southern Railway.

Today, this legendary steam locomotive is painted a more traditional black. It is owned and operated by the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum (TVRM) in Chattanooga, TN, with a captivating history that began more than a century ago. Oct 30, 2007 · SOU 4501 has been painted black at least since the latter 1990’s. She probably does get some paint from time to time. But by all accounts she is not fit for operation.

Nov 8, 2021 · Since the mid-1960s, Southern Railway 4501 has pulled countless mainline passenger excursions for the Southern (later Norfolk Southern) Railway Steam Excursion Program, and museum excursions for TVRM as well.

There are several reasons for this, but the two primary ones are: This locomotive is famous for its green paint - countless questions about "where is the green engine, the 4501?" by TVRM visitors on an almost daily basis (I was on staff there for six years - unbelievable the number of questions I fielded from visitors about this).

A rare treat for Chicago, Southern's 4501 leads the Independence Special east out of downtown Chicago and on to the N&W. This July 4th special would continue on to Washington, D.C., a trip which would cover five days.
