
Attaching heavy timber stairs in a frame - The Forestry Forum
Jul 29, 2014 · What are some methods of attaching heavy timber stair stringers in a frame? With all the exposed timber in the frame, it only seems fitting that the stairs match, but I haven't seen any references to them in the books. This will be a two section staircase, reversing direction at a landing, with both posts and beams available to attach to.

Headers and Trimmers for stairs - The Forestry Forum
Apr 5, 2025 · The engineer won't do my design, he is just checking for engineering strength etc. I need to design my headers and trimmers for the stairs. I have searched the forum and have not found any information about this area. In the following screenshot, It is my first draft of placing headers and trimmers in my quarter turn stairs.

Mar 29, 2025 · It is strong, durable, stable and of course beautiful. In the first timber frame i helped raise they used a lot of walnut. In that house they used it on the posts that held the timber frame stairs, which also had very thick walnut treads, mixed in with thick treads of other species and it also was used for some of the braces.

Sep 23, 2009 · (6x10 is a lot more appropriate) Two years after I made the 6x8 decision, I had to build a set of stairs to fit.. and it was tight. My rise worked out to be 7.5 to 7.75" and my run was 10", with 11" treads or so.

He thought that it was luck, but came back a while later to say that he had tried it on multiple examples only to find out that it wasn't hokum.

Feb 17, 2016 · I wouldn't shy away from any timber that meets the standards for it's use. Typically if you're going to use softwood, you're going to use it for the whole frame and maybe hardwood braces. This helps for the engineering analysis. For example a frame I was just involved in, was analyzed as if it were all Beech.

Apr 23, 2017 · On the backside without the long x frame will get a small platform to "climb" from the ladder to a first floor. In the future i will likely design a nice looking stairs that goes along 3 sides of the structure. But designing a stable pair of stairs is quite a challenge, that's why a simple vertical one will do the trick until then.
