An externally balanced engine's harmonic balancer will look like there is a chunk missing from it whereas the one for an internally balanced engine will be smooth all the way around.

As I understand it, larger balancers will reduce the harmonic vibrations a little bit better than a smaller one, but a smaller one will allow the engine to rev a little more quicker.

IF the timing tab is the correct one, the zero mark on the harmonic balancer will be exactly between the two chalk marks. If not, the tab either is wrong or it needs to be aligned.
