Alan Sidney Patrick Rickman (21 February 1946 – 14 January 2016) was an English actor and director. He is best known for his roles as German terrorist leader Hans Gruber in Die Hard (his first cinematic role) and as Severus Snape in the Harry Potter series.

Rickman made his film debut as the German criminal mastermind Hans Gruber in Die Hard (1988). He won the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his role as the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991).

In 2001, Rickman introduced himself to a whole new, younger generation of fans by taking on the role of Severus Snape in the film versions of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001).
