Jan 18, 2011 · If you bought the '88 490 then you have catridge forks on it. They are way better then the '86-'87 forks. After reading MXA tests from '85 thru '89 on the 490, Yamaha made some slight head mods in '87 and besides the forks nothing else changed thru '90.

Mar 7, 2020 · After years of riding more recent bikes I picked up an 88 yz490. Apprehensively though as it was fairly rough with an issue with the Kickstarter not coming back. I had read that was an issue with these and that sometimes the case breaks where the spring sits.

Nov 12, 2008 · I've been reading these forums on and off for months as I got my "new" 89 YZ490 up and running. I can't argue with most of the negative critiques...the bike is a handful. What amazes me is the inability of the "experts" to see what the popularity is.
