DL&W wanted its new locomotives to have a distinction of their own and decided to call them "Poconos", for the mountains that the railroad crossed. Designed with passenger service in mind, these locomotives had 73" drivers and a tractive effort of 64,500 pounds.

There is no information about the photographer, date, or location of this photo of No. 1648 acquired through eBay. All DL&W 4-8-4s were retired and scrapped by the end of 1953.

The Lackawanna was one of the first US railroads to adopt the 4-8-4 wheel arrangement. In contrast to the Northern Pacific, these were not called “Northern” here, but “Poconos”. They were seen here as the successor to the 4-8-2 with a larger firebox.
