The Empty Can Test, along with the Full Can Test is a commonly used orthopedic examination test for supraspinatus impingement or integrity of the supraspinatus muscle and tendon. The test is also sometimes called the Empty Beer Can Test.

The empty can test (Jobe's test) and full can test are used to diagnose shoulder injuries. Specifically, these physical examination maneuvers examine the integrity of the supraspinatus muscle and tendon .

The “full can” position is the opposite of the empty can, the palm is facing forward, the thumb side of the hand is up, the elbow points down. This external rotation position allows that greater tuberosity to clear out from under the acromion and decreases the chance of impingement.
