Reason I ask, I've seen pretty convincing published evidence for wear of parts with different hardness being more than with exactly matched parts, and the wear with different hardness parts being concentrated on the harder surface.

The gib material we use contains a lubricant and should wear almost indefinitely with normal use. The only reasons you would replace a gib would be if it is broken or if it goes in to the maximum adjustment and the slide is still loose.

Nov 1, 2006 · The lathes both have set screw gibs, and they are tricky. The best way I've found to do those is to torque the middle one first (they have 3) until snug, then do the edges.
