Jan 30, 2008 · Red Oak is a very opened grain wood, so if you put a color on it, the grain darkens while the "new wood" takes the intended color. It actually finishes pretty evenly and there really is no fear of color blotches.

I followed the manufacturer's directions, but the dye would not penetrate the wood properly. I next tried a black water based color stain "Country Color" brand.

Assuming you are not staining, you can apply a couple or three of coats of shellac, sand to the cut through point and do it again. I suspect it will take a lot of coats. Dec 18, 2011 · After bleaching the wood, applying a poly finish over the raw wood, then slowly darkening the stain with repeated (maybe 8) coats of gel stain, the customer has finally approved of the stain and grain pattern. I have applied 3 coats of MinWax antique Oil finish to give a soft luster as requested with a wonderful result.

For the top, I was considering another hardwood with a contrasting color. My hardwood dealer has access to some exotics and all domestic lumber. I’d like to use something that’s not crazy expensive.
