When to use rice hulls and how much? - Homebrew Talk
Apr 5, 2014 · There is no need to develop a special technique for using rice hulls. Half a pound in with the mash for a 5 gallon batch works perfectly fine. No pre-soaking or heating required. I simply include the rice hulls in my recipe in Beersmith and follow the instructions the program spits out for strike temps and volume.
Rice Hull Alternatives - Homebrew Talk
Apr 22, 2013 · No, you really need rice hulls. But even at 2.50 a pound, it's a bargain. A pound of rice hulls is a LOT. I mean, you need like a handful in a 5 gallon batch- and that must be just about an ounce or two. I bought three pounds of rice hulls in August, and it's not even half gone and I make 10 gallon batches!
How much rice hulls is needed, if any? - Homebrew Talk
Jun 7, 2018 · Never needed them for my Hefeweizen's or Wit's, and I crush with a credit card gap thickness .030 for all my grains. Wheat being smaller definitely do not start with .045. If you do use rice hulls, as day_tripper said, I would wet and drain them a few times to rinse them and get them presoaked. Rev.

Rice Hulls... HOW TO USE?? - Homebrew Talk
Oct 29, 2009 · Layering the rice hulls over the false bottom is the wrong way to use them. You are correct they are supposed to be mixed into the mash to help keep it loose and the grain in suspension. I too at first thought that it would be best to cover the false bottom with the rice hulls.
Rice Hulls - do I include them in Mash water calculation?
Apr 25, 2015 · If I have 12 lbs of grain, and 1 lb of rice hulls, when I'm calculating mash water do I include the rice hulls? They don't have anything to extract, but they absorb water. So if I want, say, 1.5 qts per 1 lb., do I add 12 * 1.5 = 18 quarts, or do I use 13 * 1.5 = 19.5 qts? I know, not much difference. But I'm curious.

is there a 'household' substitute for rice hulls? - Homebrew Talk
Dec 12, 2008 · More a question than anything....Since normal rice requires a cereal mash to actually get it to convert...and the purpose of rice hulls is to use something that doesn't ferment to keep the run off loose, just like high fiber bran does in our intestine to keep us "loose" as well.....

rye and rice hull ratio help - Homebrew Talk
Jan 26, 2011 · Rice hulls don't take on that much water, so if you're really concerned about a stuck sparge, you can use a whole pound. I personally would go with a half a pound, but then again I've never mashed with more than one pound of Rye malt.
